Machine and Tool Guards

Why tool guards matter

Tool guards - table saws, chop saws and circular saws - are the only barrier between a spinning blade and your fingers. Removing or messing with them is a fast way to suffer a life-changing injury. We use powerful tools on busy sites, the safety guards must always work perfectly.

Responsibilities when using power tools

It comes down to two main things: integrity of the tool and safe operation.

1. The "Do Not Tamper" Rule

  • Never Pin Back: Do not wedge, pin, or tape a guard in the "open" position to make a cut faster.

  • Riving Knives: On table saws and circular saws, the riving knife is essential to stop the timber from pinching the blade. Never remove it.

  • Tag It Out: If a guard is cracked, the spring is gone, or it doesn't snap back instantly - do not use it. Remove the battery/plug, tag it as "Do Not Use," and report it.

2. Pre-Check Routine (Before you cut)

  • The "Snap" Test: Before the battery goes in or the plug goes into the transformer, manually move the guard. If it does not move freely and it’s "sticky" with resin or dust, clean it first.

  • Battery Safety: When clearing a jammed guard or changing a blade on a plunge or skill saw, remove the battery first.

  • Table Saws: Ensure the crown guard is actually attached and adjusted to the height of the timber.

3. Specific Tool Discipline

  • Chop/Mitre Saws: The guard must fully cover the blade when the head is in the upright position. Keep hands outside the marked "No Hands" zone.

  • Skill & Plunge Saws: Wait for the guard to fully close or the blade to stop spinning before setting the saw down.

Why this matters to you

  • Amputation & Laceration: Guards are designed to deflect your hand if it slips. Without the guard, a slip results in the loss of fingers or severe tendon damage.

  • Kickback Protection: Riving knives and guards prevent the workpiece from binding and being thrown back at your chest or face at high speed.

  • Eye Protection: Guards are designed to direct dust and chippings downward or into the extractor. Removing them could spray debris directly into your eyes.
