H&S: Toolbox Talk

Podiums, platforms & towers

Why are we talking about podiums, platforms & towers?

Working at height is one of the biggest risk areas on site, and using podiums, platforms, or towers the right way makes all the difference. Whether it’s a quick ceiling fix, an install in a stair core, or a day’s work fitting panels above head height.

Falls from height remain one of the biggest causes of serious injury and fatality on construction sites. A large number of incidents involve scaffolds, podiums, and access towers, often because people become complacent with safety procedures or rush the setup.

What does safe working at height look like?

Selecting the right equipment

Always choose the right podium, platform, or tower for the job - think about height, duration, location, and type of work.

  • Podiums - for tasks at low levels where ladders are not permitted.

  • Low-level platforms (fold-out steps) - quick, light work where frequent movement is needed.

  • Towers (PASMA-approved) - are for longer or higher-level work where more space and stability are needed.

  • Never use makeshift solutions (e.g. standing on boxes or benches).

If you’re unsure which option suits the job, ask your supervisor or a PASMA-trained team member before setting up.

Setting up right

  • Always set up on a level, stable surface - never on uneven ground, loose boards, or obstructions.

  • Check all components: locking pins, guardrails, stabilisers, and platforms must be in place and secure.

  • Follow manufacturer instructions and PASMA guidelines.

  • Make sure the area around the tower or podium is clear of debris, tools, and trip hazards.

  • Tag and inspect towers before use; never use damaged or incomplete equipment.

Use and management

  • Only PASMA-trained operatives should erect, inspect, or alter mobile towers.

  • Do not move a tower while anyone is working on it.

  • Never overreach – if you can’t reach comfortably, come down and reposition the tower or podium.

  • Keep tools and materials organised and avoid overloading platforms.

  • Always maintain three points of contact when climbing up or down.

  • Report defects immediately – damaged components or unstable setups must be taken out of use.

What are the risks?

  • Falls from height – from overreaching, poor setup, or missing guardrails.

  • Collapse or tipping – caused by uneven ground, missing stabilisers, or moving while in use.

  • Slips and trips – from cluttered platforms or debris below.

  • Dropped objects – tools or materials falling from height can injure others below.

These risks are preventable when we plan properly, use the right kit, and check everything before stepping up.

INJ’s expectations and approach

  1. Plan before you climb: Always check what you’re using, where you’re using it, and how long you’ll be on it.

  2. Check and tag: Only use towers and podiums that have been inspected and tagged safe for use.

  3. Report issues: Damaged, incomplete, or unsafe setups must be reported immediately.

  4. Keep learning: PASMA training, refreshers, and toolbox talks are there to support your growth and confidence.
