Why are we talking about PPE?
It’s important that everyone at InJoinery understands what PPE is and how it’s used, so we can all meet our own and our main contractor's expectations and regulations.
What is PPE?
PPE is anything worn or used by you to minimise the risk to your health and safety. It’s designed to protect you by reducing exposure to chemical, biological and physical hazards.
Standard PPE all InJoinery fitters should have:
Steel-toe cap boots
Hi vis vest
Hard hat
Gloves
Safety glasses
Dust masks
Why is PPE necessary?
PPE is the last line of defence between you and injury. It safeguards you from potential hazards that could have short and long term effects on your health. If you abuse it, fail to use it or are given the wrong type you could put yourself in danger.
Construction sites in London are subject to strict PPE regulations to ensure worker safety. These regulations are outlined in the “Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992” (PPER 1992) and updated to “PPER 2022”.
When should we use PPE?
PPE should be used when other workplace exposure control measures don’t completely manage the risk. Before using it you need to make sure you and your team have checked the PPE, know the correct way to put it on and remove it, and feel confident in using it.
Main contractors have minimum requirements for PPE on site:
3 point (steel-toe boots, hi vis, hard hat)
5 point (steel-toe boots, hi vis, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses)
Task specific PPE:
Dust masks - different types protect against airborne contaminants like dust, fumes and gases.
Safety Glasses - protect against impact from dust, particles or small objects.
Arm coverings - protect the arms from cuts, abrasions or chemical exposure.
INJ’s expectations, intentions and how we handle it
We expect every fitter to wear the minimum PPE requirements set out by the main contractor on site. We also strongly advise that you always use task specific PPE where necessary.
At InJoinery we maintain an internal PPE register to track the personal protective equipment each fitter has, as well as any missing items. Charlie will oversee this register and ensure that any required PPE is supplied.
