H&S: Toolbox Talk

Return to work

Why are we talking about returning to work?

This toolbox talk focuses on the safe transition back to the workplace following the December holiday period. Maintaining safety standards during this time is a significant task, as it often takes time for teams to refocus on the basics of working safely.

Why is the first day back dangerous?

Research indicates that Mondays and the first days returning from a holiday often see higher incident rates. Key contributing factors include:

  • Lack of Focus: People may not have their minds 100% on the job, which can lead to personal injury or harm to others.

  • Physical Factors: Lower energy levels, decreased morale, or low exercise levels over the Christmas break can make workers more susceptible to injury.

  • Environmental Changes: The job site and structures may not be in the same state as when you left; materials may have shifted during the break.

  • Mental Distractions: Stress or distractions from personal matters during the holiday can impact attention to detail.

  • Loss of Familiarity: Time away from the site can cause workers to forget specific hazards and risks associated with their tasks.

Safe restart procedures

Before restarting equipment or tasks, follow these steps to ensure a safe return:

  • Review and Plan: Stop and review all job tasks and plans before starting work.

  • Verify Readiness: Ensure you are "fit for work" and can maintain 100% focus on the task at hand.

  • Conduct Inspections: Complete thorough inspections of your tools, equipment, and immediate work area.

  • Confirm Safeguards: Take the necessary time to ensure all safety guards and measures are correctly in place.

  • Support the Team: Look out for your co-workers as they also adjust to the return to work.

  • Stop Work Authority: Always be prepared to stop work immediately if any hazards are identified that need to be addressed.
