Purpose of this talk
To raise awareness of the risks associated with portable electrical appliances and ensure everyone understands the importance of regular PAT testing and safe electrical practices on site.
What is PAT testing?
Portable Appliance Testing involves the inspection and testing of the electrical equipment to ensure it is safe to use. Using visual inspections (E.g. frayed wires & cracked plugs) and electrical tests with specialist equipment that test earth continuity and insulation resistance.
What equipment needs to be PAT tested?
Portable appliances (anything with a plug) - in our environment, all 110v & 240v power tools including extractors.
Why do we PAT test?
Preventing accidents:
Faulty tools can cause electric shocks, fires or equipment failure.
Promoting compliance
Ensures we are complying with safety laws - Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
When should we PAT test?
New equipment, after repairs or damage and at regular intervals.
Tips for electrical safety
Visual checks, before use always check:
Plug and cable for damage, burn marks, exposed wires or loose connections
Socket for signs of overheating
Don’t use damaged equipment:
Report it
Tag it as “Do Not Use”
Don’t overload sockets:
Use extension leads correctly
Don’t “daisy-chain” multiple adaptors or leads
How INJ handle PAT testing
If you have tools that need PAT testing please speak to one of the team and we will arrange for it to be done as soon as possible.
